Fil-Am Singer H.E.R Joins Production Of Broadway Musical On Imelda Marcos

H.E.R. is beyond grateful for the opportunity to produce her first-ever musical

Fiilpino-American singer H.E.R. will join the production team of “Here Lies Love,” a Broadway musical on the rise and fall of former First Lady Imelda Marcos.

“Filipinos are a global people. We come in all colors and build bridges across cultures. I am beyond excited to produce my first Broadway musical and forge a unique and meaningful partnership with ‘Here Lies Love,’” the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter said in a post on her Instagram account on April 21, 2023.

A shocked Lea Salonga, who is also part of the musical, also commented on the post, as well as other stars Jericho Rosales and G Tongi.

“Here Lies Love” was conceptualized by award-winning singer-songwriter David Byrne and DJ-producer Fatboy Slim.

The musical’s producers earlier addressed criticisms, explaining that the show “offers a creative way of re-information — an innovative template on how to stand up to the tyrant.”

“We cannot tell the modern history of the Philippines without the United States. They’re intertwined. Here Lies Love is an Anti-Marcos show. It is a pro-Filipino show, being told in a quintessentially American form: the Broadway musical,” the producers said in a statement last January.

“Here Lies Love” also marks Salonga’ to the Broadway scene. She was last seen on Broadway as part of “Once On This Island” in 2017.

The musical will begin previews on June 17, 2023, and will officially open on July 2023.

H.E.R. and acting

Apart from being behind the scenes with “Here Lies Love,” H.E.R. is making her acting debut in the upcoming film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, “The Color Purple.”

It was announced last 2021 that she will take on the role of Squeak, a character who goes from a juke joint waitress to an aspiring singer in the Warner Bros musical movie directed by Blitz Bazawule.

H.E.R. is part of a star-studded cast that includes Danielle Brooks, Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey, Taraji P. Henson, Corey Hawkins, and Colman Domingo.

“The Color Purple” is a feature adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the book of the same name by Alice Walker from 1982. The story follows a woman named Celie Harris and tracks her lifelong struggles as an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.

Oprah Winfrey, meanwhile — who starred in the original film — is producing the film via her Harpo Films company. Steven Spielberg is also on board as a producer.

“The Color Purple” is slated for release in the US on December 25, 2023.
