From the 2003 best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger to the 2009 film starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, The Time Traveler’s Wife had everyone shedding tears. And now, we get to experience the love story once again – this time as HBO’s newest series.
The show – focusing on the tragic romance between a time traveler who can’t control when he leaves and comes back to the present and the girl he falls in love with – will star Theo James and Rose Leslie. In fact, HBO just released a first look of the two as Henry and Clare.
In the photo alone, we can see the love and chemistry between the couple. Laughing and looking at each other fondly, the two sit close together in a cozy living room. In a story full of fleeting meetings scattered all over Clare’s life from childhood to adulthood, this scene may even be a moment in which they’re both in the present.
The series will be adapted by Steven Moffat, the co-creator of BBC’s Sherlock and former head writer of Doctor Who. Moffat will also executive produce the show with Sue Vertue and Brian Minchin through Hartswood Films.
“I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it. In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl in the Fireplace’ as a direct response to it,” Moffat said.
“When, in her next novel, Audrey had a character watching that very episode, I realized she was probably on to me. All these years later, the chance to adapt the novel itself, is a dream come true” he continued. “The brave new world of long form television is now ready for this kind of depth and complexity. It’s a story of happy ever after — but not necessarily in that order.”
There’s no official release date yet, but the series went to production a couple months ago, so we’ll likely see the show premiere in 2022 at the latest.
