According to the sources, Mason will portray Hiccup, the awkward son of the village chieftain who forms a friendship with a dragon.
Nico will play Astrid, Hiccup’s fellow student in dragon training and his love interest.
Fifteen-year-old Mason is making a name for himself in Hollywood. Viewers may know him from his performance in the horror film ‘The Black Phone’ alongside Ethan Hawke. In the movie, he plays a young boy held captive in a soundproof basement by a sadistic killer.
Meanwhile, Nico made her film debut in Tim Burton’s “Dumbo.” This was before joining the cast of the post-apocalyptic drama series “The Last of Us,” based on the popular video game.
The live-action adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon” was announced in February. The original director, Dean DeBlois, is returning to helm the film.
Based on Cressida Cowell’s 2003 book, the story follows the adventure of two unlikely best friends, Hiccup and Toothless. Initially, Hiccup’s village engages in dragon-fighting, but his perspective changes when he befriends the injured dragon, Toothless, nursing him back to health.
Hiccup and Toothless forge a strong bond and work to mend the rift between the Vikings and the dragons.
Before How To Train Your Dragon Live-Action Remake
The animated version of “How To Train Your Dragon” spawned two sequels released in 2014 and 2019. It also inspired three television series: “DreamWorks Dragons,” “Rescue Riders,” and “The Nine Realms.” A short film titled “Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury” was also created.
While Universal Pictures hasn’t released much details about the film, their casting decision is excellent. Based on their recent projects, it’s promising to have Mason Thames and Nico Parker take on the lead roles.
