Between gatekeeping and enjoying the reboot, Michael V. prefers doing the latter.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks ever since GMA 7 unveiled Voltes V Legacy, from head writer Suzette Doctolero and cartoonist Pol Medina Jr.’s war of words to netizens dissing the concept of a live-action remake. This also gave comedian Michael V., who considers himself a true-blue fan of the 1970s mecha anime, a lot to unpack in his most recent vlog.

In the most recent video on his YouTube channel, Bitoy Story, the comedian was asked about his thoughts on GMA-7’s reboot title, and the reactions that said reboot has been receiving. Michael V. didn’t hold back on his response.

“Doon sa mga nakapanood ng teaser ng Voltes V Legacy, huwag na kayong magpanggap na hindi kayo na-impress at hindi kayo na-excite.

‘Yung iba kasi nag-ga-galing-galingan, kung anu-ano ang sinasabi, ‘dapat ganito, dapat ganun.’ Naka! Huwag ako!” the comedian said.

Nonetheless, he leveled with fans on his own expectations, but was keen to trust the process: “Well hindi naman ako magpapanggap na hindi mataas ang expectations ko, pero kampante naman ako kasi syempre kilala ko naman si Direk Mark Reyes, geek talaga ‘yan eh, tsaka matagal na niyang pangarap ‘yan.”

He also reminded all the members of the reboot’s production team that, amidst pressure from all fronts, they should enjoy and make the most of the rare opportunity.

Dapat malikot talaga ‘yung utak mo sa project na ‘to. Dapat bumalik ka sa pagkabata mo. Given na ‘yung kakaririn eh, pero kapag hindi ka nag-enjoy, doon magsisimula ang problema,” the comedian’s advice went.

Lastly, he shared his ultimate hope: “Sana nga, pagsama-samahin talaga ng GMA ‘yung mga totoong fans ni Voltes V to make sure that this project succeeds. Maraming bashers pero feeling ko mas maraming nagdarasal na maging successful itong project na ‘to.”

It was in early February when GMA-7 announced the cast of Voltes V Legacy.

Miguel Tanfelix will play Steve Armstrong, the eldest of the three Armstrong brothers, and the pilot of the Volt Cruiser, Voltes V’s head.

Ysabel Ortega will play Jamie Robinson, the lone female and the “voice of reason” on the team, and the pilot of the Volt Lander, Voltes V’s feet.

Matt Lozano plays Big Bert, the second eldest Armstrong brother, and the pilot of the Volt Panzer, Voltes V’s body and chest.

Raphael Landicho plays Little Jon, the youngest Armstrong brother, and the pilot of the Volt Frigate, Voltes V’s legs.

Lastly, Radson Flores plays Mark Gordon, an orphan and an expert rodeo, and the pilot of the Volt Bomber, Voltes V’s arms.

Also part of the cast is Martin del Rosario, who breathes life into Prince Zardoz, Voltes V’s arch-nemesis. Joining him in his nefarious plans are Epy Quizon and Carlo Gonzalez, who will fill the boots of Zuhl and Draco, respectively.

GMA-7’s Voltes V reboot first drew contempt from fans who criticized its decision to have Suzette Doctolero as its head writer. Doctolero serves as a creative consultant for the network and is known for penning GMA-7’s soap operas and drama series, including My Husband’s LoverMy Faithful Husband, and most recently, Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka. However, she is also credited for the scripts of several epic-fantasy and fantasy action series such as IndioKamandagGagambino, and perhaps her most popular work, Encantadia.

In her recent spat with cartoonist Pol Medina Jr., Doctolero was insulted by Medina Jr.’s “offensive” and “misogynist” view of soap opera writers, saying that drama shows involve more than just “sampalan at sabunutan.
