After portraying the anti-heroine for three movies now, the Suicide Squad actress is hitting pause on the iconic DC character.
Over the past five years, we’ve seen Margot Robbie don the white face paint and embrace the attitude of DC’s iconic anti-heroine Harley Quinn. But after her role in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and now James Gunn’s forthcoming film The Suicide Squad set to come out next month, the actress bared her plans to “take a break” from playing the part, and admitted that she doesn’t know if and when the vigilante villain will appear again in the near future.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Australian actress talked about her tiring experience when depicting the DC Extended Universe character.
“It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds… and filming this, so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley because she’s exhausting,” Robbie told the outlet. “I don’t know when we’re next going to see her. I’m just as intrigued as everyone else is.”
She was also surprised to find out during the interview itself that her character took a different turn at the end of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. [SPOILER AHEAD!] If you’ve seen the film when it premiered on HBO Go, you’d know that the final scenes are set in an apocalyptic future where Batman (Ben Affleck) talked about how Quinn had died in his arms.
Apparently, Robbie had not seen the mentioned scenes until she was brought up to pace by the folks at EW. Nonetheless, it was a conclusion she thought was characteristic of DCEU films, where directors have the discretion to take the story towards a certain path.
“I guess it’s kind of like the comics,” Robbie said. Each movie is its own sort of thing, and I think that works in the comic book world, and I think that works in the DC film world as well. It feels like there’s so many adjacent stories, worlds, and films happening at the same time, just like there are in the comics.”
“So, yeah, I didn’t know that, but it doesn’t necessarily change what other people are able to do with this universe, I don’t think. What one director decides I don’t think dictates what another director might be able to pick up and do with the world and the characters, which is fun,” she added.

Despite her decision to turn away from the Harley Quinn character for the meantime, Robbie still has her plate full of exciting projects. Aside from The Suicide Squad, the 31-year-old is also set to play the classic Mattel doll in the Greta Gerwig-helmed Barbie, which she said is going to be “different” than what people would expect.
“Something like Barbie where the [brand], the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted,’ ” Robbie said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
