First released on March 28, 2002 by video game holding company Square Enix, Kingdom Hearts fused the worlds of Final Fantasy and Disney together in an unprecedented mash-up that had protagonists Sora, Riku, and Kairi fighting alongside Disney characters to counter the forces of darkness.

The game, which spanned two more sequels on gaming platforms like Playstation and Xbox One, was an instant success that garnered critical acclaim over the years for its stunning visuals, musical score, and fantastic gameplay.

It’s currently the tenth best-selling Playstation 2 game of all time and is also lauded as being one of the best video games ever created.
Now, for its 19th anniversary, the Kingdom Hearts fandom is content in relishing in the memories the beloved game has given players over the years.
These games have genuinely changed my life for the better, and are really, really special to me. They’ve got me through some rough times and taught me to not give up, as cheesy as that sounds. I don’t where where I’d be without them

The most recent of the series, Kingdom Hearts 3, was released in 2019. Fans speculate that for the 20th anniversary next year, the popular game will come out with something completely new and exciting.
Creator Tetsuya Nomura, known for teasing fans on possible new projects, has confirmed that something is on the way!
Nomura confirms that the Kingdom Hearts team is currently working on something new for the next installment within the Kingdom Hears Series. They're trying to work towards 2022 for the 20th anniversary.

Here's the translation of his newest interview with Famitsu! pic.twitter.com/R5ocMgkG5w
In a September 2020 interview with Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, Nomura affirmed the plan for an upcoming Kingdom Hearts installment: “I’ve already shifted my thinking to the next installment, and the Kingdom Hearts team is already starting on something new.”
But as to what exactly the new installment is, Nomura chose to stay mum. He hinted, “In regards to what we will announce from here on out, everything will probably surprise you, so please look forward to it!”

Fans of the legendary franchise sadly can’t expect to see anything concrete until next March; in the meantime, they can hold on to the promise of that “surprise” and dwell in all the adventures and fun Kingdom Hearts has left them since 2002.
