“Baby Boy, Baby Girl” director admits having apprehensions about Kylie Verzosa for the role
Kylie Verzosa has been doing heavy dramas and serious roles in her past films. This is why she really enjoyed doing her latest movie, “Baby Boy, Baby Girl.”
During the recent press conference for the film, she says that she finds it easier to do romantic-comedy than drama. She explains, “Parang mas madali nga ito dahil mas napapasok mo yung personality mo. Yung drama kasi, mas binubuhay mo yung character. Mas may emotional diary, mas kailangan quiet ka. Ito, dapat mas kailangan ilabas mo yung personality mo. Just don’t be afraid to be yourself.”
She is also grateful to her mother studio, VIVA Films, for allowing her to explore different genres in terms of her movies.
“I’m really grateful to VIVA for always supporting me and any venture I want to go into. Pero siyempre, this, I haven’t done a rom-com before and moreover, lead ako na rom-com. So, this is one genre na I wanted to explore. Who knows kung magaling ba ako dito, kaya ko ba, kung may chance ba ako? So, this is an avenue that I always wanted to explore.”

Apprehensions on Kylie Verzosa
“Baby Boy, Baby Girl” director Jason Paul Laxamana admits that initially, he had apprehensions if Verzosa is fit for the role, only because they have not worked together yet.
Laxamana explains, “Siguro, yung fact na hindi ko pa siya nakikita sa comedy or sa comedic na role, the fact na hindi ko pa siya nakakatrabaho, yun lang. Pero kasi kapag may ganung situation, vinu-view ko yung mga past works niya.”
With that, Laxamana was able to watch Verzosa’s VivaMax movie, “Ikaw Lang Ang Mahal.” He says about what he watched, “She exceeded my expectations. Hindi naman sa nag-u-underestimate kasi parang inisip ko, siguro, beauty queen ‘tapos napilitang mag-artista. So, baka hilaw yung acting but no, her acting is very nuanced, very detailed. So, doon ako mas na-solve.”
Laxamana was able to appreciate Verzosa when they had a workshop for the film and had no qualms of being goofy.
“Well, actually, sa workshop, nag-acting workshop kami. Ang pinakaunang apprehension ko lang noon is siyempre, beauty queen siya dati. So, kapag kasi beauty queen, may assumption ako na medyo masyadong conscious kung papangit yung mukha, e may comedy aspect yung pelikulang ginagawa namin. So, willing kaya siyang sirain or magpaka-goofy, magpaka-wacky at the expense of her prim and proper [image]? Pero yun nga, she knew the homework and she did!”
As for Verzosa, she did not have a hard time doing such wacky acts for the film despite her so-called “prim and proper” image. She expounds, “Honestly, feeling ko, sa Instagram lang yun. Siyempre kasi, ipinapakita ko lang yung best versions of myself, di ba? Pero in person, wala talaga akong pakialam.“
She adds, “Honestly, kapag lalabas ako ng bahay, hindi ako nakaayos, pupunta lang ako sa gym, naka-hoodie, jacket, sneakers. When I present myself to you guys, I want to look my best and when I go out, I wanna look my best. But on a normal day, jeans, sneakers, jacket, walang make-up. I’m just normal and simple. Honestly, excited ako na makita niyo ito.”
“Baby Boy, Baby Girl” opens today, March 22, in cinemas.
