Liza Soberano “gets real” with the PH showbiz industry in a guesting
Liza Soberano recently opened up about the love team phenomenon in the Philippines. She discussing the expectations for actors to be both “reel and real.”
In an interview on the “Get Real” podcast with BTOB’s Peniel and Ashley Choi, Soberano explains that in love teams, two actors are paired together and expected to be a real couple both on and off-screen throughout their careers.
“People don’t want to see you aside any other male actor or any other male in general,” Soberano adds.
Soberano was part of the love team “LizQuen” with her real-life boyfriend, Enrique Gil, and they were one of the more famous love teams in the country during the 2010s. Alongside their contemporaries, KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla) and JaDine (James Reid and Nadine Lustre), they headlined some of ABS-CBN’s primetime dramas and movies released by the studio’s film outfit, Star Cinema.
In the podcast episode, Soberano also shared her experience on how love teams are formed.
“It’s not that they choose it for you. What happens in the beginning of your career is they kind of test you, they put you in a project together where you guys are not necessarily the leads and it’s kind of a chemistry test,” Soberano explains.
Yet, Soberano reveals that love teams are not allowed to confirm if they are dating in real life.
“Whenever we do interviews going into the projects, they are always asking whether we are officially dating already or not. It becomes this whole thing where your career and your personal life—the line between the two gets blurred. People just don’t know what reality is,” she says.
Soberano also notes that love teams are the only way to become a big star in the Philippines as an actor, aside from being a singer.
“In the Philippines, the only way to become a big star really—if you’re not a singer, if you’re an actor—is to be in a love team,” she declares.
