We finally know why these heroes let some pretty nasty things pass even after living on Earth for 7,000 years.

Chloé Zhao’s Eternals is almost upon us, and Wednesday night’s sneaky reveal of the film’s final trailer is just enough to put us right on the edge before its November premiere.

There was a lot to unpack in the three-minute-long footage that was essentially a glimpse into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s imminent Phase Four. It wasn’t cagey about its heroes’ cosmic origins too: within just the first few minutes, it already addressed the consequence of Thanos’ devastating snap, which triggered what Salma Hayek’s Ajak explained to Richard Madden’s Ikaris as the Emergence. She also acknowledged that the Eternals, who have lived on Earth for 7,000 years to fend off the Deviants, knew of the snap’s effects.

In the next minute, Kit Harington’s character, Dane Whitman, confronts Gemma Chan’s Sersi with the most curious question: for their apparent all-knowing abilities, why didn’t the Eternals help in the fight against Thanos?

Sersi’s answer was curt but candid: “We were instructed not to interfere with any human conflicts unless Deviants were involved.”

Watch the final Eternals trailer below:

Unsatisfactory as Sersi’s answer may have sounded, it gives us the ideal notion with which to take in the new breed of superheroes’ motives. We already know that The Celestials, who first appeared in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, couldn’t care less of humans as long as they achieve their purpose (remember Ego, the living planet who introduced himself as a Celestial in Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Yep, they’re sinister like that).

So, if an “Avengers-level threat” like Thanos still seems puny to them, just imagine the kind of cosmic conflict that would force the Eternals to get back together after centuries of separation. That may sound menacing, but, as Lia McHugh’s Sprite said, “at least we have front-row seats.”

Set after the events of 2019’s Avenger’s EndgameEternals is directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao and brings a star-studded ensemble that includes Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.

The Eternals hits theaters on November 5, 2021.
