MJ Rodriguez becomes first trans woman to be nominated for a leading actress Emmy

So the annual Emmy Awards recently announced its nominees, and it looks like MJ Rodriguez has made history. Yes, with this nod, The Pose star just became the first out trans woman to be nominated in the outstanding lead actress category for her role in the FX drama, as per CNN Philippines

To add to this, she’s also the first trans performer in any leading category, according to GLAAD, a leading LGBTQ advocacy organization. So what did Rodriguez say about this? “For me being recognized by my peers and by my colleagues, it just means the world for me,” she said. “I’m a human at the end of the day. All I wanted was the world to see me, I wanted them to see that I had something to offer.”

Rodriguez’s Emmy nod is one out of the nine categories Pose has been nominated for this year. Billy Porter, who won his first Emmy award in 2019, is also nominated in the lead actor category, and Pose received a nomination for best drama. How exciting for the show, right?

This isn’t the first time Pose has made Emmy history. In 2019, Porter also made history by becoming the first openly gay Black man to win an Emmy in the leading category. In case you’re out of the loop, Pose is an American drama show about New York City’s African-American and Latino LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming drag ball culture scene. The third and final season of the show came out this year.

Will Rodriguez and the rest of the Pose gang win Emmys this year? We’ll find out this coming September 20. In the meantime, you can watch the first two seasons of Pose on Netflix.
