Everyone’s rejoicing that we’re finally getting a chance to see the Snyder Cut of the 2017 DC film, Justice League, next month. The Snyder Cut is what fans dubbed what the movie could’ve been if the original director, Zack Snyder, stayed on instead of handing the reins to Joss Whedon. Now, it’s no longer just a hypothetical, because Snyder and Warner Bros. actually made the Snyder Cut happen and are premiering it on HBO Max and HBO GO on March 18th.
Seeing as only a small part of Snyder’s work made it into the theatrical version we all saw in 2017 and that the Snyder Cut is going to be two hours longer, it’s obvious that there are going to be tons of changes. Here are just four of the biggest ones to expect:
Jared Leto as Joker
Perhaps one of the most talked-about Snyder Cut changes is the fact that Jared Leto will be reprising his role as Joker in this version. Leto’s performance as the iconic Batman villain was last seen in Suicide Squad (2016), but he was asked to return and join production again as they filmed the additional scenes for the upcoming version. Snyder has even been releasing images of Leto in the role these past few weeks.
Darkseid
Originally hinted at in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Darkseid will be appearing in the Snyder Cut. Snyder had always intended Darkseid to be part of the movie, but those plans were scrapped when Whedon took over. We got our first look at the villain in the footage they released as a countdown to the official trailer.
More Cyborg
One of the problems that made it hard for Justice League to work was that it was released before half the team even got properly introduced to the DCEU. This is especially true for Cyborg, who we don’t learn that much about in the film. In the Snyder Cut, however, he will be given a much more in-depth backstory. Ray Fisher, who plays Cyborg, is probably the most vocal among the cast when it comes to supporting the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign.
Direct References to Knightmare
The Knightmare timeline, which is the imagined dystopian future where Darkseid prevails and Superman becomes a tyrant that Batman wants to overthrow, was already set up in Batman v Superman. So, the fact that references to it were cut in Justice League just made the scene in BvS all the more out of place. The Snyder Cut, however, will be expounding more on that and how it plays into characters’ arcs. Snyder even shared a photo of Batman from the Knightmare timeline.
