6 Netflix Original K-Dramas that made the year 2020 more bearable

Since most of us have had to stay indoors because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot have resorted to binge-watching shows on Netflix to pass the time. Netflix viewership saw a steady rise starting from the onset of the lockdowns up until now, and it almost feels like Netflix was prepared for all of us going into quarantine because of all the new content they keep releasing on the platform.

It wasn’t too long ago that Netflix took notice of the Korean Wave, but now there’s always a new Netflix Original K-Drama. This year took it to the next level. There are so many memorable and beloved K-Dramas released this 2020.

Since we’re almost at the end of the year, let’s take a look at some Netflix Original K-Dramas that made this year more bearable:

Crash Landing On You

At the start of 2020, Crash Landing On You was all the rage. While it’s definitely romantic, this is not your usual rom-com because most of the story is set in North Korea. Aside from the swoon-worthy romance between characters Captain Ri and Se-Ri, it was interesting to see the portrayal of life in the North. Featuring suspense and action, this drama will be remembered for a long time.

Itaewon Class

Itaewon Class is the refreshing K-Drama to watch this 2020. While we love K-dramas, it’s no secret that representation is a bit rare. The characters in Itaewon Class are people who would be considered at the fringes of Korean society, which makes watching them that much more riveting. The discourse on class divide and social inequalities make this one memorable.

The King: Eternal Monarch

Written by Kim-Eun Sook, the same one who wrote Descendants of the Sun and Goblin, The King: Eternal Monarch was one of the biggest K-Dramas this year. Featuring a Lee Min Ho fresh from military service and the talented Kim Go Eun, you have everything you need in this drama – love, mystery, action, and a plot to die for.

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay is one of the dramas that made our heartache this year. As the two main leads get together, both of them undergo emotional healing from all the trauma they experienced in the past. While this one is emotional, you’ll find yourself healed and satisfied by the end of this series.

Record of Youth

Record of Youth is Park Bo Gum’s last drama for a while because of military service, and it’s one that’ll make you remember him for a long time. This drama follows his character as he aims to become a famous actor. This really captured what fangirling feels like (thanks to Park So-Dam’s character) and showed a glimpse of what it’s like for our favorite Korean stars.

Start-Up

Even though Start-Up deals with corporate and business matters, this one will have you at the edge of your seat because of the lives of its characters. While Bae Suzy and Nam Joo-Hyuk both shined as the main leads, one person undoubtedly stole the spotlight – Kim Seon Ho. Not everyone might agree with the ending but this is still worth a watch!
