A live-action ‘ Pokémon’ series is reportedly in the works at Netflix

As first broken by Variety, a new live-action Pokémon is in early development at Netflix, with the outlet’s sources saying that Lucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson is set to helm the project as a writer and executive producer.

As of the moment, details regarding the series’ cast, plot details, and timeline remain elusive, although sources told Variety that the live-action series will be similar to 2019’s Detective Pikachu, which featured a hybrid of CGI elements in a real-world setting, and starred Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds, who voiced the popular Pokémon companion Pikachu. The movie was considered a relative success, grossing over $433 million worldwide on a reported budget of $150 million.

This latest report comes after the streaming giant adopted several titles from the popular video game franchise, including “Pokémon: Indigo League,” Pokémon XY,” and “Pokemon Journeys,” among others.

Netflix has also been aggressive in acquiring the license to make a live-action adaptation of some of the most popular anime shows, including John Cho’s highly-anticipated Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho, One Piece, as well as its executing its own live-action rendition of Avatar: The Last Airbender, with original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko returning as showrunaners.

As for Henderson, his work on Lucifer ends once the show’s sixth and final season streams on the platform this September 10. Aside from being attached to reports of a live-action Pokémon project, Henderson is also developing a series adaptation of “Shadecraft,” a comic book series that he wrote himself and Lee Garbett illustrated.

Neither Netflix nor Henderson has commented on this news.
