The adventure continues!

True to its theme song which sings “the fun will never end,” Adventure Time is coming back in a big way. This time, though, it won’t be Finn the Human and Jake the Dog stomping ground, but their gender-swapped (and species-swapped?) counterparts, Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat in a 10-episode series coming to HBO Max.

In the new series, Fionna and Cake are joined by former Ice King Simon Petrikov in their adventure across the multiverse, all while being tracked by a powerful new villain who threatens to erase them from existence. The company makes sense, too — debuting in the third season of the original show back in 2011, Fionna and Cake was initially part of Ice King’s in-universe fan fiction where every citizen in the land of Ooo had a gender-bent counterpart.

Long-time Adventure Time producer Adam Muto will serve as the series showrunner and executive producer. Cartoon Network Studios will also be producing the spinoff series.

This is the latest project to come out of the studio’s partnership with HBO Max, which also previously released three one-hour original specials concerning different characters from the Adventure Time realm. The first followed the adorable robot BMO; the second one centered on Princess Bubblegum and the vampire Marceline’s blooming relationship, while the latest saw the reunion of Finn and Jake. A fourth special, which features Peppermint Butler, is set to come out later this year.
