“Avatar” Retakes Crown for Highest-Grossing Film After China Re-release, Beats “Endgame”

In 2010, James Cameron’s Avatar became the most commercially successful movie and took the spot for the highest-grossing film. Then came Avengers: Endgame, the 2019 movie that culminated over a decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity saga, became one of the biggest movie events in the decade, and topped Avatar. What no one saw coming, though, was Avatar reclaiming the spot once more.

Avatar premiered in 2009, so how did they manage to retake the title over 11 years after its premiere?

This weekend, Cameron’s iconic sci-fi blockbuster was re-released in China. With this release, Avatar’s total box office gross has now reached $2.802 billion, surpassing Endgame’s $2.797 billion.

The directors of Endgame, Anthony and Joe Russo, took to Instagram to congratulate James Cameron. They shared artwork showing the Avengers logo dissipating to reveal the Avatar title card with an illustration of the world of the Na’vi. The caption read, “Passing the gauntlet back to you…”

Ultimately, though, Disney still wins big either way as both Avatar and Endgame are owned by Walt Disney Studios.

Jon Landau, the producer of the Avatar franchise, also expressed his gratitude. “We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theaters during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support.”

Landau also added, “We are hard at work on the next Avatar films and look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story for years to come.”
