Inside The ‘Batgirl’ Cancellation: Its Director Heard The News On His Wedding Day

The Bat-signal won’t be calling Leslie Grace to action anymore.

On August 3, Warner Bros. Discovery shut down the nearly-completed Batgirl film. This set social media ablaze. Upset fans attacked the studio over their controversial decision.

If you’re unfamiliar with the character, Batgirl is a member of the Bat Family. Like Bruce Wayne, Batgirl doesn’t have special powers. She’s a martial artist who’s also very good with computers. Batgirl has only had a few live-action appearances. The earliest was in the 1966 Batman TV show. The most recent was in Batman & Robin. Her civilian alter ego Barbara Gordon appeared as a kid in The Dark Knight.

Grace landed the role of Batgirl in July 2021. It would’ve been her second movie project following her appearance in In The Heights. The film featured big names like Brendan Fraser, Jacob Scipio, and J.K. Simmons. Warner Bros. did not disclose Brendan and Jacob’s roles in the movie.

In December 2021, the studio added Michael Keaton (Batman) to the cast list of Batgirl.

So what happened to Batgirl?

A year after Leslie was cast as Batgirl, the project got scrapped by the studios. According to many sources, WBD’s reason is to focus on blockbuster theatrical releases.

This angered fans since the movie had already wrapped production. Yet, the studio says it will no longer release the film, which was set to premiere on HBO Max later this year.

The sad part is that co-director Adil El Arbi discovered the shocking news on his wedding day. A few hours later, directors Arbi and Bilall Fallah responded to the news.

In a recent statement released by Warner Bros. Discovery, they thanked the cast and crew for all their hard work.

“The decision reflects our leadership’s shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is a talented actor, and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are grateful to the filmmakers and their respective casts,” said WBD.
