The movie is set to be the “biggest film ever made in Australia.”
As announced earlier this week during a press conference in Australia’s New South Wales, Furiosa, the prequel to 2015’s hit post-apocalyptic film, Mad Max: Fury Road, is set to begin shooting in the country in 2022, with Anya Taylor–Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II already confirmed as cast members.
Director, producer, and co-writer George Miller broke the news about the spin-off film. During the event, state premier Gladys Berejiklian also expects Furiosa to become the biggest film ever made in Australia, anticipating that it will generate more than 850 jobs and bring in $350 million to the local economy.
For Miller, there’s no better name to take on the titular role than Taylor-Joy. The Queen’s Gambit star plays a younger version of Imperator Furiosa, previously played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 film. In an interview with the New York Times last May, he shared that he considered using de-aging technology to allow the 44-year-old Theron to play the part again. Ultimately, he decided against it and opted for the aptly-aged Taylor-Joy, who is 24.
Meanwhile, Hemsworth also revealed how being cast for the prequel film is both a dream come true for him and an honor to be a part of the saga.
“It really is, out of everything I’ve done, the biggest pinch-myself moment, because I’ve grown up watching it and it’s so iconic,” the Thor actor shared during the press conference. “It is a huge honor. A lot of pressure, but exciting pressure that is certainly motivating.”
He also shared his excitement on Instagram last year when news broke that he will play a yet-to-be-disclosed role on the film.
Miller has directed all four “Mad Max” films and was nominated for best picture and best director for Mad Max: Fury Road at the 2015 Oscars.
Teasing the film a little bit, Miller spoke to the press in Australia about what to expect from Furiosa, whose past, he thinks, wasn’t explored in detail in the “Fury Road” film.
“The one thing I can say about it, Fury Road… within the film, [it] happened over three days and two nights. This (Furiosa) is a saga, happens over many years. So, there’s a lot of different elements to it.”
Furiosa is set to show in cinemas on June 23, 2023.
