The comedy series “Derry Girls” has been confirmed to be coming back for season three, but it will be the last for the show.
Series creator and writer Lisa McGee said in a statement that it has always been part of the plan to end the series after just three seasons. “‘Derry Girls’ is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase–which was a small, magical window of time,” she said.
Lisa, who shared that the sitcom is dedicated to her hometown and its people, expressed her gratitude to them, as well as to the team who made the series possible. “‘Derry Girls’ is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honor to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved. I’d like to thank the people of Derry and Northern Ireland for getting behind us,” she said.
“Thanks also to the team behind the series, the incredible Hat Trick Productions, and a special thanks to Channel 4–the channel I grew up watching; the channel that made me want to write comedy and the only channel that could have made our show,” she added.
“Derry Girls,” set in the 90s, follows the lives of five teenagers during the end of The Troubles in Derry. Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Louisa Harland, and Dylan Llewellyn star as Erin, Clare, Michelle, Orla, and James, respectively.
The series won the “Best Comedy” award at the Irish Film & Television Academy Gala Television Awards and the “Best New TV Sitcom” award at the British Comedy Guide Awards in 2018. Lisa McGee also received recognition for her writing from the two award-giving bodies.
