No, the War Machine star doesn’t get it either, but he gladly accepts.

Of Don Cheadle’s 11 Emmy nominations, his latest one might be the strangest one yet, even to him — on Tuesday, the MCU veteran was accorded an Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series nod by the Television Academy for his brief appearance in the premiere episode of Disney Plus’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which lasted a mere 98 seconds.

The nod came as a shock even to Cheadle himself, who took to Twitter to type out that he was as surprised as everyone else.

“thanks, well wishers. sorry, haters. agreed, *ers. i don’t really get it either. buuuuuuuuuut on we go…” the Hotel Rwanda star wrote.

Should Cheadle win for his two-minute cameo, then that would surely leave more mouths agape considering he’s been nominated four straight times for his role in House of Lies and twice for Black Monday but never took home the gold.

Nonetheless, major nominations for fast and fleeting appearances on screen might be rare but not impossible. Judi Dench pulled off the same in 1999, scoring an impressive Best Supporting Actress win during that year’s Oscars for her scene-stealing eight-minute portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in John Madden’s Shakespeare in Love.

Nomination or not, Cheadle’s stint as Colonel James Rhodes in the series provided for some fluid storytelling and a pivotal angle about race as the Marvel Universe extends to TV series. In the maiden episode of the Disney Plus show, Cheadle’s Rhodes invites Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson to have a heart-to-heart talk about taking up the heavy mantle left by Captain America. He walks Wilson through the hefty with the history of the shield and the intricacies of a “broken world,” while also hinting at the significance of a Black man becoming the next symbol of hope, as an attempt to temper Wilson’s resolve.

The scene may have been silent and the moment aloof, but that doesn’t make it any less important, and any less deserving of the Emmy spotlight.
