Because of the pandemic, many film releases and events had to adapt quickly to the streaming platform, and this includes the 46th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). Thankfully, the festival pushed through and we got to see all the great movies this year’s slate has to offer. But during the 2020 Gabi ng Parangal, MMFF’s award night, one film shone brighter than the others, and that’s Antoinette Jadaone’s Fan Girl.
Last December 7, “Fan Girl” won eight out of the nine awards that it was nominated for. These included major awards like best director for Jadaone, best lead actor for Paulo Avelino, best lead actress for Charlie Dizon, and even best picture.
“Fan Girl” is a coming-of-age movie that tackles the darker sides of meeting one’s idol. The story follows an obsessed fan girl (played by Dizon) who finally gets to meet her favorite celebrity (which is a fictionalized version of Avelino). Through an unforgettable night with him, she starts to see how this image of him that she has put on a pedestal doesn’t exactly coincide with who he really is, including his flaws and the skeletons in his closet.
The film was adored by fans and critics alike because of its compelling characters and poignant exploration into idol worship.
Another movie that got significant recognition that night is Magikland, which won five awards. This includes best visual effects, best production design, and best musical score. You can find the full list of winners here.
