“Gameboys,” the hit Boys’ Love (BL) series starring Elijah Canlas and Kokoy Santos, continues to garner acclaim outside the country as it earns an International Emmy Award nomination.
The show’s creator, IdeaFirst Company, broke the news via its social media channels on Wednesday with a post congratulating the cast and crew of the first-ever Filipino digital BL series.
Joining “Gameboys” under the kids’ live-action category are three other entries hailing from Australia, the Netherlands, and Argentina. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences also distinguished the series as the only Filipino production vying for the award in this year’s edition of the award show.
According to the Emmys’ description, the series “tells the story of Cairo and Gavreel, two teenage boys who meet and fall in love online. Their love story unfolds through video calls and social media interactions, while the entire country and the rest of the world are facing a life-changing pandemic.”
Gameboy’s premiere on IdeaFirst’s YouTube channel in May 2020 was met with massive success after attracting more than 1.5 million views after just two episodes. Last November, the series saw its first international acclaim when it bagged the Best Web Series award in the Indie Shorts Awards in Seoul, Korea. It debuted on Netflix last December and released a feature film titled Gameboys: The Movie last July.
Executive-produced by Perci Intalan and Jun Robles Lana and directed by Ivan Andrew Payawal off a script by Ash Malanum, Gameboys is set to return for a second season. You can watch the trailer, which dropped just last week, below:
