Netflix is really out here fulfilling our Philippine mythology fantasies. First, they turn Trese into a stunning animated series, and now, they’re working to produce a film on Philippine mythology!

And guess who they got on board: Ronnie del Carmen, the Pixar veteran whose original screenplay for Inside Out earned him an Oscar nomination, is set to direct the film as part of an exclusive deal with the streaming giant, per Cartoon Brew’s exclusive report.

Talking about the platform provided by Netflix, Del Carmen said that “this is where I’m growing and nurturing these stories that have never been told, in an arena they deserve to belong to.”

A native of Cavite, Del Carmen’s first brush with Hollywood was as a set painter for Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 psychological war film Apocalypse Now, which was shot in the Philippines. After moving to the US in 1989, he started working as a storyboard artist and character designer for Warner Bros. Animation, before moving on to DreamWorks Animation. This is where he worked until 2000, serving as a story supervisor for classic animated films such as The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado, and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

After his stint at DreamWorks, he brought his talents to Pixar, where he began ascending the ranks of the animation hierarchy. He worked as a storyboard artist for Ratatouille and WALL-E, and as the storyboard supervisor for Finding Nemo and Up.

For Inside Out, Del Carmen was promoted to co-director, working alongside Pete Docter. It was a film based on Docter’s daughter undergoing adolescence, which would later go on to win an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

He left Pixar in 2020 and inked an exclusive deal with Netflix last August, where he is expected to direct films and animated series as well as provide guidance on other animated projects that the streaming service plans to work on.

With a stacked resumè, Ronnie Del Carmen is more than capable to lead us to a treasure trove of Philippine mythology. And we’re stoked to stream all of them soon!
