Jason Blum Moves On From ‘Paranormal Activity’ Franchise, Says Last Movie Was ‘Terrible’

Well, he’s not wrong.

Jason Blum, the producer of Paranormal Activity, teased the franchise’s end. The long-running franchise has seven installments, and the eighth is in the works. Ergo, Paranormal Activity: The Other Side might very well be the final chapter of the series.

Blum developed seven Paranormal Activity films from 2007. The latest was Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin in 2021. But the three-time Oscar nominee says he dislikes the direction the series went in

Blum recently received the Premio Raimondo Rezzonico for Best Indie Producer. He spoke with Variety after receiving the award at the Locarno Film Festival. In the interview, Blum talked about the franchise and his intent to move on.

“It’s been enough already,” Blum said. “That last Paranormal Activity movie was terrible.”

The Paranormal Activity franchise opened a lot of opportunities for Jason Blum. The films helped establish his Blumhouse Productions as a horror movie powerhouse. The franchise also allowed him to pursue bigger projects.

His production studio is known for low-budget horror flicks that generate many sequels. But Blum stated that he does not feel the need to prolong his franchises as much anymore.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension was set to be the series’ final installment. But that plan changed when Next of Kin was ordered for development in 2019. The movie tells the story of filmmakers working on a documentary about a haunted Amish town. It premiered on Paramount+ in 2021. It received unfavorable reviews from both fans and reviewers.
