It looks like Johnny is on a roll! Following his lawsuit against former wife Amber Heard, the 58-year old American actor will receive a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s San Sebastian film festival, as per Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The actor who’s best known for his iconic role Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean will collect the festival’s Donostia award at a ceremony on September 22 in ‘recognition of his career.’ Given his long illustrious career playing characters that are now household names, the honor is well-deserved.
“The role of a film festival is to select the most relevant and interesting films of the year and to extend recognition to those who have made an extraordinary contribution to the art of film,” San Sebastian International Film Festival director José Luis Rebordinos said, according to USA Today. “The Donostia Award to Johnny Depp is our recognition of a great actor, a man of cinema with a great career.”
Past recipients of the Donostia award — the festival’s highest honor which is named after the Basque word for the coastal town of San Sebastian — include actors Meryl Streep, Richard Gere, Ian McKellen, and Robert De Niro. Last year, it was awarded to Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen. It looks like Depp is joining a pretty cool club, right?
The 69th San Sebastian film festival, the highest-profile movie event in the Spanish-speaking world, takes place from Sept. 17 to 25. The event was originally intended to honor Spanish language films but has established itself as one of the most important movie festivals in the world.
Considering all the drama Depp has had to endure these past few years, being awarded this honor is a well-deserved break. Fans will surely look forward to this new award.
