It’s been more than a year since movie houses and theaters like the Cinema ’76 Film Society took the brunt of the pandemic. What used to be vibrant, intimate spaces for cinephiles along Luna Mencias Street in San Juan and Anonas in Quezon City had gone still and silent.
That is, until business started to pick up again for its Anonas branch. But it isn’t making a comeback as a micro-cinema, but as a dainty movie-themed diner: the Cinema ’76 Café.
Since quarantine restrictions are still in place, TBA Studios are instead giving film lovers the next best thing: a fresh spot where they can sip a cup of joe, dig into a hearty meal, and discuss their favorite films while still socially distanced.
Nestled in a quaint al fresco dining spot outside its old location in Anonas, Cinema ’76 Café is an “open-air neighborhood coffee shop” that’s adorned with all kinds of movie-inspired embellishments, with the most noticeable being TBA Studios’ much-loved movie posters hung on the café walls. Cinema Bravo posted a first look at the café’s interiors on Tuesday, which you can view below:
The deep-blue couch seats in the dining area also mimic the microcinema’s signature seating style, while a makeshift marquee reminiscent of movie houses from decades ago shines brightly over the cashier and kitchen island.
As for its menu, the café offers a wide selection of drinks that include hot and cold drinks, bottled espresso drinks, and unique frappe flavors – care to try their Popcorn Frappe?
Pair your cup of coffee with their homey pastries and desserts. For starters, try having a slice of their hearty Mango Cake, which is a playful nod to the iconic mango scene from TBA Studios’ 208 historical blockbuster film Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral.
While we’re still forced to watch our favorite films from the safety of our own homes, the arrival of the Cinema ’76 Café gives us some sense of hope that the cinematic experience is bound to be back sooner rather than later.
Cinema ’76 Café will have its soft opening this June 11, Friday. It will be open on weekdays from 1 PM to 7 PM for dine-in, takeout, and online delivery via food delivery apps or via their social channels on Facebook, Instagram, or Viber at 0906-236-2365.
