Sure, Potterheads are celebrating the Harry Potter franchise’s two-decade milestone. But Lord of the Rings won’t allow their Ringers to roll over and let the 20th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring pass without getting a treat too!

In a way, LOTR fans also got a cast reunion, although not in any way that they expected.

During the December 15 episode of “The Late Show,” host Stephen Colbert, who’s arguably the biggest LOTR aficionado out there, gushed about how Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films was “the greatest trilogy in movie history” and lamented how he won’t be on air next week to laud the trilogy’s landmark anniversary.

“What I want to know is, where the hell are the celebrations? How is it possible that we are not marking it as a people? Harry Potter is getting a giant 20th anniversary special with a full cast reunion — seriously?” exclaimed Colbert.

Then, turning to the show’s bandleader Jon Batiste for “one celebration to rule them all,” Colbert debuted his own special hip-hop tribute to the trilogy titled “#1 Trilly” — and “strange” doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Killer Mike and Method Man kicked off the track with Colbert, but then it starts getting crowded with a lot of LOTR cast members, including Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, and Orlando Bloom who all rapped along. Even Andy Serkis and Hugo Weaving provided guest vocals in the hip-hop homage, playing the flute and dropping some bars in the elvish language.

The crew went on to take jabs at many other popular trilogy films, including The Godfather, Star Wars, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, and even Pitch Perfect, much to Anna Kendrick’s chagrin.

The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring debuted on December 19, 2001, to much critical acclaim. It spawned two other sequels: The Two Towers in 2002 and The Return of the King in 2003, the latter of which won a record-setting 11 Oscars, tying with Ben-Hur and Titanic for the most wins ever. In total, the trilogy earned 30 Oscar nominations, of which they won 17, and grossed almost $3 billion worldwide.

New Line Cinema, the studio behind the original trilogy, is currently developing an animated theatrical feature based on the history of The Two Towers’ Helms Deep. Amazon is also working on a prequel spin-off based on JRR Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, which is set to come out next year.
