It’s the year of Jennifer Lopez! The 52-year-old triple threat hit the ground running in the 90s and never looked back; just in 2021, Lopez launched a skincare line, performed at a presidential inauguration, signed a multi-year deal with Netflix, and got back with an old flame (yes, it’s Ben Affleck).
Fans of this living legend will be pleased to know that, back in the day, Lopez was known for some pretty classic rom-coms. Have a look at this list to check out her most memorable roles.
The Wedding Planner (2001)
Fresh off the success of her second album, J.Lo sought to conquer the big screen with her 2001 rom-com, The Wedding Planner. Here she plays an ambitious wedding planner enlisted to plan the nuptials of a cheeky Matthew McConaughey and his socialite fiancé. While not a critical success, the film did wonders for Lopez’s popularity, making her the first woman to have a number one film and album simultaneously in the United States.
Maid in Manhattan (2002)
At this point in time, Jennifer Lopez ruled the world. With iconic singles like “I’m Real” and “Jenny from the Block” selling millions, it seemed funny that the established pop star could play a maid who falls in love with a politician at a fancy New York hotel. But she did it and she did it well. Maid in Manhattan became the highest-grossing film of Lopez’s career, solidifying her superstar status.
Shall We Dance? (2004)
J.Lo and Richard Gere? Say no more! Shall We Dance? had Jennifer Lopez completely in her element as an aloof dance instructor who takes on the challenge of teaching a lost-in-life lawyer how to get his steps in. In the film, we see less of the usual bright and smiley Lopez and more of a serious actor/dancer ready to show off her chops. Either way, that girl can dance.
Playing a dog-walking, free-spirited woman who meets the man of her dreams (with the mother-in-law of her nightmares), Lopez had audiences laughing and falling in love with this 2005 film. She played opposite Jane Fonda, an interesting combination that made for a very successful film.
What to Expect When You’re Expecting (2012)
Starring alongside Hollywood stars like Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick, and Dennis Quaid, Lopez didn’t fail to shine in this funny film where she plays a photographer eager to bring a child into her and her unprepared husband’s life. The movie didn’t fare so well with critics, but that’s ok — we still love you J.Lo!
