The much-anticipated Netflix adaptation of DC Comics’ The Sandman comic book series finally revealed its cast. The star-studded cast includes Tom Sturridge, Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook of Narcos fame, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar.
In case the lead actor looks familiar to you, it’s because he’s been in the acting scene since 1996. Sturridge starred in Hollywood films such as Vanity Fair, Being Julia, and Like Minds, and has been active in the theatre scene. He’s even been nominated in the Tony awards for his performance in Orphans in 2013 and Sea Wall/A Life in 2020. On top of this impressive resume, the handsome British actor once dated actress/fashion world staple Sienna Miller as well.
What is The Sandman anyway? According to a synopsis shared by HypeBeast.com, “a rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.”
Netflix also shared a note from the author himself: “For the last thirty-three years, the Sandman characters have breathed and walked around and talked in my head. I’m unbelievably happy that now, finally, they get to step out of my head and into reality. I can’t wait until the people out there get to see what we’ve been seeing as Dream and the rest of them take flesh, and the flesh belongs to some of the finest actors out there.”
Created by American author Neil Gaiman, the original The Sandman comic book series ran for 75 issues from January 1989 to March 1996. Netflix has yet to announce the show’s release date and the official trailer.
Whether you’re a fan of the comic book series or you’re simply curious about all the hype, The Sandman will surely be an entertaining binge-worthy show that will provide much-needed escapism from the worries of everyday life.
