Netflix adds Daniel Dae Kim to 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' cast

It looks like Netflix’s adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has found its Firelord. Variety reported that Daniel Dae Kim is joining the live-action series.

If you’re a fan of the show, you probably already know who his character is, but for everyone else, basically, Fire Lord Ozai is described as the ruthlessly-driven leader of the Fire Nation who demands everyone live up to his impossible standards, especially his teen son, Prince Zuko.

Ozai’s drive to conquer and unite the world under firebender rule is a family burden – he believes that it’s his destiny to finish a war started by his ancestors. The character was voiced by Luke Skywalker a.k.a Mark Hamill in the animated series.

Aside from Kim, Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, and Dallas Liu have already been cast for the show. Cormier will star as Aang, with Kiawentiio set to play Katara. Ousley will play Sokka and Liu will play Zuko.

The 53-year old Kim is best known for his role as Jin Kwon on Lost, but he’s had a lot of notable roles after, including Hawaii Five-O, Hellboy and The Divergent Series: Insurgent. He previously voiced the character of General Fong in the Last Airbender animated series as well as Hiroshi Sato in The Legend of Korra, which served as a followup to Last Airbender.

The live-action adaption of Last Airbender was first announced in 2018, and fans are anticipating how the streaming giant will be adapting the beloved series.

The animated version aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon from February 2005 to July 2008. While it may take a while before the world sees Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, they can still binge-watch all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix.
