Netflix takes Squid Game to the next level in the Philippines

If you’ve been on the internet for the past couple of days, there’s a huge chance you might have come across posts talking about Netflix’s new mega-hit original series Squid Game. While the world binged on the South Korean action drama, eagle-eyed netizens noticed that there’s a statue in Ortigas that resembles one of the iconic elements of the show.

If you were one of those people, this is to confirm that your eyes weren’t deceiving you. Netflix Philippines was taking the marketing game for the most popular television series on the streaming giant to the next level.

They put up THAT huge scary doll that signals players to stop and go during the “Red Light, Green Light” game in the first episode in a popular mall. The 10-foot-tall doll is at Robinsons Galleria Ortigas Mall (East Wing Entrance) to monitor jaywalkers that cross the mall’s nearby street. Jaywalkers were surprised when the giant doll started moving its head and its eyes flashed red light. Here’s the doll in action so you can see it for your virtual self.

Needless to say, the internet has gone berserk over the marketing stunt. Netizens from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand even joined in on the conversation.

“Aga naman magsara ng ROBINSONS geh uwi na lang ako (Robinsons is closing early. Ok, I’ll go home instead)” Charlotte Dadia captioned in her Facebook post.

Grabe naman shizuoka andito ka na agad sa Philippines (Wow shizouka, you’re already in the Philippines). Watch squid game on Netflix,” Facebook page Saranghaeyo Oppa posted.

If like most of the world wide web, you’ve already seen the show, you probably know the role that creepy doll played. If not, it’ll probably make you want to watch the show to understand the hype. Squid Game is streaming exclusively on Netflix.
