If you’re wondering what Morbius can do (and how fast he can do it), here’s your answer.
In between our longing to finally watch Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony is keen to remind us that there’s another superhero brooding around the corner: Morbius, which stars Jared Leto, is scheduled to hit theaters this January, and little by little we see more of the sinister, super-powered vampire crawl out of the shadows.
The latest preview was dished out last Sunday during the Comic-Con Experience. Along with the teaser for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), Sony also unveiled an exclusive Morbius showing Leto transform into a “living vampire.”
We’ve already been introduced to Dr. Michael Morbius in Sony’s first trailer. A gifted doctor, Dr. Morbius falls dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and gambles his life by exposing himself to a potential cure derived from bats. What at first seems to be a radical success slowly turns Morbius into a vampire with superhuman strength, speed, and a craving for blood.
But we’ve probably heard of a vampire before, right? What we haven’t seen, though, is how Leto transforms into one.
In the exclusive preview, an ailing Leto is aided by Martine Bancroft (Adria Arjona) onto a stretcher. As the cure is injected onto his body, he slowly transforms into a rabid fiend with red eyes and razor-sharp claws and teeth, slicing through a group of armed mercenaries with ease before collapsing and returning to his human state.
Along with the sneak peek, Sony also dropped the newest poster for Morbius, featuring Leto’s death stare both as a human and a vampire.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius, albeit a Sony property, strangely exists within the same universe that Spider-Man does. The initial trailer curiously injected with plenty of elements from Peter Parker’s world: the Oscorp building, a graffiti of Spider-Man with the word “murderer” plastered over it, and Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. Vulture, the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming played by Michael Keaton.
So technically, Morbius’ slow build still figures in the swelling Spider-Man hype. Whether they’ll cross paths as friends or foes remains to be seen, though.
