We don’t think even Vecna saw this coming.
Stranger Things has become more controversial than ever with its fourth season. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), and everyone else grew so much. But they’re still haunted by a ghost from the past. Fan theories on the Netflix franchise have filled various social media platforms. But one specific theory about Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) has been on top since season 4’s release.
Will’s sexuality and feelings for Mike have been the stuff of speculation for some time. Schnapp has shied away from providing a proper answer in interviews. Yet, on July 13, Schnapp finally shed light on his character during a sit-down with Variety.
Schnapp revealed that his character sees Mike differently in the latest season. He said, “They’ve been pulling that out over the past few seasons. For season four, it was me playing this character who loves his best friend. But he struggles with knowing if he’ll be accepted or not, and feeling like a mistake and like he doesn’t belong.”
“Will has always felt like that. All his friends have girlfriends and they all fit into their different clubs. Will has never found anywhere to fit in. That’s why so many people come up to me. They say that they love Will and they resonate with him so much because he’s such a real character.” Schnapp added.
Fans who debate about Will’s feelings for Mike strengthened their arguments online. This was after watching a moment shared by the two characters in one scene. Noah admitted that he did not realize how impactful the scene was until he saw it on screen.
“When I saw it on screen, it was actually more subtle. I liked how they edited it together. The day was a lot of fun. I love playing Will. This scene was important for him because it solidified that truth. He loves his best friend and he doesn’t know how to tell him,” Schnapp said.
Noah Schnapp appreciates how the directors portrayed Will’s sexuality. He shared in the interview that it always has been up to the audience’s interpretation. Audiences might believe that he’s refusing to grow up or that his character actually is gay. Fans have received Will’s sexuality story well, with some mentioning that it’s as real as it gets.
With the end of season 4 and the start of the pre-production for the last season, fans want more. One thing’s for sure, though, it’ll take some time till we get an update on Will’s and Mike’s story.
