Spider-Man: No Way Home Is The First Billion Dollar Movie Since 2019

Did you know that only 47 movies have officially made more than a billion dollars at the box office? Well, that exclusive club now has a new member. Spider-Man: No Way Home has become the first and only (so far) pandemic-era movie to have made more than $1 billion dollars worldwide. This is an exceptionally impressive feat considering the movie has been out for less than two weeks!

As per Variety, Sony’s comic-book flick reached this milestone in just 12 days, tying with 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the third-fastest film to reach the billion-dollar benchmark. In case you’re wondering, the top two spots goes to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. These superhero movies took 11 and five days, respectively, to reach the coveted billion-dollar mark.

Despite the surge in new cases across the globe due to the new Omicron variant, ticket sales for Spidey’s latest adventure could not be stopped. The film is still playing in many sold-out theaters in the U.S. and has yet to hit cinemas in some countries, including the Philippines. Spider-Man: No Way Home is slated to premiere in Philippine cinemas on January 8, 2022.

With this feat, Spider-Man: No Way Home becomes the first movie to gross over a billion dollars since 2019. The last movie to have surpassed the $1 billion mark was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Before this year’s installment of the Spider-Man franchise came out, the top-grossing Hollywood film of 2021 was the James Bond sequel No Time to Die, which grossed $774 million globally.

Unless you’ve been hibernating under a rock the past few months, you probably know what Spider-Man: No Way Home is all about. But basically, the story follows the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. The world has found out the identity of Spider-Man a.k.a Peter Parker. In order to try to separate his personal life from his adventures as a Superhero, Parker asks the help from Doctor Strange. As a result, a lot of chaos ensued.

Starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Marisa Tomei, the movie has been causing a lot of buzz on the web for months because (SPOILER ALERT!) of the speculated participation of actors who previously played Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield. And yes, they’re in the movie. Can it be January 8 already?
