If you needed any more reason to watch the hit series Ted Lasso, this is it!
The Apple TV+ show swept the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards with a record 20 nominations, later going on to win in 7 categories. Among the many awards, Lasso managed to bag the coveted award in Outstanding Comedy Series, beating out other popular series like black-ish, Cobra Kai, Hacks, The Flight Attendant, The Kominsky Method, PEN15, and Emily in Paris.
Co-stars Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham also won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, respectively.
In classic Roy Kent style, Goldstein offered an expletive-laced thanks to the Ted Lasso team. “I was very, very specifically told I’m not allowed to swear,” he said on the Emmy stage. “So this speech is going to be f—ing short.”
“This cast made me sick, they’re so good,” he continued. “To Jason, Bill, Brendan, and Joe Kelly, thank you for creating this show and for inviting me to be a part of it. It’s the most privileged privilege and pleasures of my life. This is the f—ing icing on the cake.”
Waddingham also gave an excited speech in which she duly thanked co-star and fellow nominee, Juno Temple, and her parents. “To my parents, who I nearly lost during the filming of this season, I’m so glad you’re here to see this moment,” she exclaimed.
Jason Sudeikis, who plays Ted Lasso himself, won Outstanding Lead Actor.
“I’m only as good as you guys make me look. It means the world to me to be up here and just be a mirror of what you guys give to me. Thank you so much,” the actor said.
The Warner Bros. series is about an optimistic American football coach named Ted Lasso who relocates to England to try his hand at coaching an English Premier League team, despite having zero experience in soccer. The show was released in August of 2020 and quickly became a fan favorite for its heartwarming scenes, positive messages, and feel-good story.
Ted Lasso is currently reaching the end of its second season, and has been renewed for a third.
