Another vicious alien symbiote debuts on screen, and he knows Eddie Brock all too well.

We’ve all seen the nostalgic video by Marvel revealing their Phase 4 lineup, so you know business also has to pick up on Sony’s side of the yard. Enter the new trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the follow-up to the 2018’s Venom that’s also been forced by the pandemic to push its premiere date back.

Get ready for a whole lot of dysfunctional debates from Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his absorbed alien symbiote, Venom, who seems to be more vivacious than violent this time around. The opening sequence to the trailer shows the symbiote practicing its accustomed life on Earth, even learning a little Chinese, and trying its best to cook Brock a proper meal. Emphasis on “trying.”

But the film’s title won’t be that on-the-nose if the trailer didn’t turn towards Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady, the murderous maniac-slash-serial killer who manages to get a hold of another alien symbiote that turns him into — you guessed it — Carnage

Though we’re still wondering how Kasady becomes Carnage, director Andy Serkis did explain why it had to be him from a storytelling vantage and why it had to be him and Brock in an epic alien brawl:

“They (Kasady and Brock) both had strange upbringings with strange relationships with their parents and their families. And there’s an inherent loneliness that they both recognize in each other. Cletus actually reaches out and will only speak to Eddie Brock,” Serkis shared to IGN. “The cops, therefore, want Eddie to go in and investigate and try and discover where some of the bodies, some of the many bodies of Cletus’s victims are.”

We’re also given a sneak peek at other pivotal characters such as Naomi Harries’ Frances Barrison, also known as Shriek, and Stephen Graham’s Detective Patrick Mulligan. Comic buffs would recognize Mulligan as Toxin, the spawn of Carnage, who tries to control the symbiote. This isn’t confirmed, though, but it at least promises some continuity to the franchise.

Despite all these characters, Venom fans still feel frustrated: is Spider-Man, the alien’s arch-nemesis, finally cross over to this film? Well, after seeing the shot of Ravencroft Institute, where The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Electro was kept, and the less-than-subtle still of The Daily Bugle, the paper that employs Toby Maguire’s Peter Parker and whose owner, J. Jonah Jameson, debuted in Spider-Man Far From Home, we’re not throwing our hopes out the window. And who else saw Carnage squashing a spider on focus in the trailer?
