Warner Bros. Announces That Wonder Woman 3 is Officially in the Works

Warner Bros.’ DC Cinematic Universe (DCEU) slate can be a tough one to follow given all the frequent changes in greenlit productions and release schedules they’ve made. This is often because of how certain movies are received by critics and how some key actors are pulling back from the DCEU.

But one franchise the studio seems to have confidence in is Wonder Woman. Only a couple days after the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, premiered on Christmas Day, Warner Bros. announced that they will be fast-tracking the production of the third movie.

Why So Soon?

With other DCEU release schedules still up in the air, it’s a pretty bold move to fast-track production on the third Wonder Woman when 1984 just premiered a couple days before. However, it seems like the success of the sequel is exactly what prompted this decision.

Because of the pandemic that prompted releases to happen on streaming platforms, whether something can be considered a box office hit or not is more complicated. Warner Bros., though, reported that despite the lack of a theatrical release, the film’s earnings exceeded their expectations.

The sequel brought in $85 million worldwide during the opening weekend compared to the first installment’s $103 million. However, that’s already impressive given the fact that people can’t watch 1984 in cinemas and many countries don’t even have HBO Max, which is where the sequel was released. According to Variety’s box office report, this is even the “best opening weekend to date in the coronavirus era.”

Who’s Coming Back?

There’s very little information on the third Wonder Woman movie so far. What we do know is that the studio confirmed that Patty Jenkins, who directed the first two movies, is going to direct the last installment of the trilogy as well. Gal Gadot, who plays the titular superhero, will also return as Diana Prince as expected.

The chairman of Warner Bros., Toby Emmerich, stated that, “As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women – Gal and Patty – who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy.”
