Camila Cabello is making her acting debut in Amazon Prime Video‘s “Cinderella,” a modern take on the classic fairytale of the same name.
The musical romantic comedy film follows the story of a young woman who aspires to become a successful fashion designer and plans to open her own shop called “Dresses by Ella.” Like previous versions of the story, Cinderella lives with her stepmother and stepsisters, wishes to attend a ball, and has a fairy godparent on her side.
In the first trailer released by Amazon Prime Video, the protagonist declares that everyone will know her name and that “life outside the basement starts now.”
Kay Cannon, the director of the film, said that the audience will see a “vocal and active” Cinderella in this version. “I just felt like it was a great opportunity to show this loved, iconic character that is Cinderella in a way that’s more relatable to what girls and young women in particular are going through, where they can really see themselves,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“The biggest change is in Cinderella and [the] Prince, because Cinderella’s like the alpha in this story and our Prince is a beta, and that’s not normally the case — or, he evolves. In this story, everybody around Cinderella learns something from her and changes.”
Kay also said that Camila was a “natural” and did a good job acting for her debut film. “She’s going to surprise everyone, because nobody’s ever seen her act before,” she said. “She’s so good, and she’s so natural, and just funny and beautiful and really, really talented.”
When the official first look for “Cinderella” came out, Camila said that being in this film was “one of the most magical experiences” of her life.
Joining Camila in the movie are Idina Menzel as Cinderella’s stepmother Vivian, Maddie Baillio and Charlotte Spencer as stepsisters, Billy Porter as the Fab G/Fairy Godparent, and Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert. “Cinderella” will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 3, 2021.
