Multiverse confirmed? Not quite, just Deadpool being Deadpool.

It’s quite convenient that Disney has amassed the assortment of high-caliber names it has today, because then it’d be easy to promote projects under its banner. In the case of Free Guy, which stars Ryan Reynolds, it becomes even more convenient, because who better to break the fourth wall and talk about himself than Reynolds’ other character, Deadpool?

In the latest meta-clip first tweeted by Reynolds himself, the infamous Merc with a Mouth gave his honest reaction to the trailer of Free Guy in a vlogger format that also had Taika Waititi’s Korg character on set.

As the pair sarcastically roasts the trailer, it becomes clear that both Reynolds and Waititi appear in the film as the hero and the villain, respectively. So, the inevitable gag here is that the unlikeliest duos of the MCU are reacting to their alter-egos, with Waititi calling the villain “nice” and Reynolds calling the protagonist “punchable” and… well, you know the drill.

Free Guy is one of the titles that Disney acquired as part of its acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019 (hence Deadpool’s remark that the film looks “fun, in a last-days-of-Fox fire-sale kind of way”). It stars Reynolds as a non-playable character in a video game named Guy who realizes his existence and develops free will. Waititi, meanwhile, plays Antoine, a destructive game developer set to thwart the newly-sentient Guy out of the game.

Since it began its marketing that year, its July 2020 release date has been pushed back thrice now due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but has finally secured a schedule this August.

Okay, so this isn’t technically canon and Deadpool hasn’t officially crossed over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — not yet, at least. Speaking to Collider, Marvel President Kevin Feige shared that the third Deadpool film will be an “R-rated movie” with a “very different type of character in the MCU.” As for Korg, we’ll see the alien rock-man sooner as he returns in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is also directed by Waititi.

In the meantime, let’s enjoy their spot in Free Guy, which comes out on August 13.
