WATCH: Idris Elba’s ‘Bloodsport’ kicks butt in new Suicide Squad trailer

It’s strange to spot a major trailer for a DC movie debut in YouTube’s pre-roll ads, but we’ll take what we can get.

On Tuesday, some eagle-eyed Internet users caught sight of the brand-new trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming DC comic book movie The Suicide Squad in YouTube’s pre-roll ads. If you skipped your eternally frustrating ads, don’t fret, because an official version was finally uploaded to the channels of DC and Warner Bros., though they were left unlisted for the official cast to “leak” into the interwebs.

Nonetheless, it’s here, and it wowed audiences by flexing the Suicide Squad’s second coming in a form of another rag-tag group of rogue villains. Entitled “Rain” after the Grandson track, the trailer kicks off with an introduction to Bloodsport (Idris Elba), a war veteran whose most notable feat is “putting Superman in the ICU with a Kryptonite bullet.” It then moves towards a series of brief and fleeting look into the other members of the Suicide Squad, including a raunchy riff on Weasel (Sean Gunn), a seemingly harmless humanoid weasel — “seemingly,” because apparently, he’s killed 27 children,” per Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman).

The only clue we were given as to why the baddies had to band together is to destroy all remaining traces of what Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) called “Project Starfish.” As clarified by Peacemaker (John Cena), the classified mission has nothing to do with a butthole, and more with a giant spore-firing monster on the loose.

Watch the team meet each other in the second trailer below:

Completing the squad is Peter Capaldi as the Thinker, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Michael Rooker as Savant, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Flula Borg as Javelin, Storm Reid as Bloodsport’s daughter Tyla, Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark, and the returning Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

John Ostrander, the creator of the 1980s Suicide Squad team from which the film draws influence, also joins the cast as Dr. Fitzgibbon. Taika Waititi is also set to appear in a still-undisclosed part.

Along with the new trailer, Warner Bros. also dropped a fresh batch of stills from the film.

Originally shelved by DC due to doubts over its viability following the studio’s sour interaction with the “SnyderVerse,” The Suicide Squad, a loose sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, found new life when director James Gunn briefly jumped off the Guardians of the Galaxy ship. This created a window for Warner Bros. to sign him up to direct a soft reboot, hence a weird yet welcome acknowledgment in the DC-led trailer hailing Gunn’s past with Marvel.

The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6.
