The timeline gets rewritten in MCU’s first animated series bound for Disney Plus.

King T’Challa switching suits as the renegade Star-Lord, Agent Carter wielding Captain America’s shield, and Spider-Man transforming to a… zombie? In the ever-expanding realm of Marvel where “every universe is different, each one unique,” all that is possible, as seen in the fresh footage for the studio’s forthcoming animated series What If…?, which debuted on early Friday morning.

In one of his final performances before his passing last August, Chadwick Boseman voices T’Challa once again, but instead of portraying the King of Wakanda, he takes the place of the estranged Peter Quill and becomes Star-Lord and Yondu’s companion.

Other “what ifs” that the show tries to answer is what if it was Peggy who drank the super-soldier serum and became Captain Carter? What if Vision had the insidious intentions that Ultron had? What if Gamora had access to Thanos’ arsenal? What if Killmonger’s life didn’t turn out so tragic and became a good guy?

Eagle-eyed comics connoisseurs will also spot a few Easter eggs in the trailer, including a straight-from-the-source adaptation of the Marvel Zombies, penned by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. It also features a first vague look at Uatu the Watcher, whom audiences first saw in one of the post-credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and who “observes all that transpires” but “do not, cannot, and will not interfere.”

Watch all the potential interconnection of the universes in Marvel’s “What If…?” trailer below:

Apart from Boseman, other long-time MCU stars who lent their voice to the series include Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Michael B. Jordan (Killmonger), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Josh Brolin (Thanos) Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Taika Waititi (Korg), Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) and Frank Grillo (Crossbones), among others.

Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright will also join the series as the voice of The Watcher. Meanwhile, the characters of Iron Man, Captain America, Dr. Stephen Strange, Captain Marvel, and Taneleer Tivan/The Collector will all be voiced by actors different from the ones who portrayed them in the MCU films.

The first 10 episodes of Marvel’s What If…? premieres on August 11 on Disney Plus.
