Six years after they disbanded, the K-Pop icons were a surprise element of CL’s Coachella performance.Â
The music festival Coachella proved to be a treat for K-Pop fans worldwide. CL, the leader of 2NE1, was performing under the “Head in the Clouds Forever” set of 88rising last April 17. Towards the end, Park Bom, Minzy, and Dara appeared alongside her for a 2NE1 reunion. Their appearance sent shockwaves through the crowd and social media!
After their 2009 debut, 2NE1 became one of the most beloved K-Pop girl groups. Sadly, they disbanded in 2016 and dropped their final single in 2017. Much to their fans’ delight, they remained open to a reunion and CL finally made it happen at Coachella.
They performed their 2011 hit “I Am The Best.” All four members seemed elated to be back together for the energized number. It marked the first time they stood on stage as a group since 2015.
CL on the 2NE1 reunion
CL released a statement on social media not long after. “I am happy and blessed to be alive with pleasure,” she wrote. “Long enough to witness the marks I make and things I create blossom.”Â
She revealed that she extended Coachella’s invitation to her 2NE1 sisters. She “wanted to get together through [her] strength and [their] strength, before it was too late.” CL also said the reunion was a thank-you to the fans “who have loved and spent time with 2NE1 over the past 12 years. In that sense, today was a very important and meaningful day for me more than anyone else.”
Known to Filipinos as the “pambansang krung-krung,” 2NE1’s Dara made waves with her look. Aside from her hair-raising ‘do, she also lost a shoe during the performance. She did one of her iconic high kicks and it flew off. The shoe and its owner reunited a day later, with Dara tweeting a photo of the complete pair.
Her Filipino fans and friends joked about the incident, including Joross Gamboa. He shared a photo of Dara wearing one shoe on the Coachella stage. “Down to earth ka talaga @daraxxi. Nakatapak lagi sa lupa,” he wrote.
The 2NE1 reunion was exciting in more ways than one. All these years later, they are still “the best!”
