Astroworld tragedy claims its 9th victim

Almost a week after the ill-fated events unfolded at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival — where eight concertgoers died — a ninth victim has also tragically passed away.

Bharti Shahani, a 22-year-old senior at Texas A&M, succumbed to her injuries after days of fighting for her life in the hospital.

“At 6:50 last night, Bharti Shahani lost her battle from the horrific injuries she sustained at the Astroworld festival,” her family’s attorney, James Lassiter, said at a news conference last Thursday. He identified Shahani as the woman in a widely-circulated video of a concertgoer on a gurney being dropped at the hands of medical personnel.

“There have been a lot of questions, and I think it’s common knowledge, but there was a video going around that most people have seen of a young lady falling from a gurney as they were trying to get her out there – evacuate her. That was Bharti Shahani,” Lassiter stated.

Shahani reportedly attended the concert with her younger sister, Namrata, and cousin, before getting separated in the crowd. At the press conference, Namrati recalled her sister’s last words to her to be “Are you okay?”

She later suffered two heart attacks on the way to the hospital before being put on a ventilator.

Shahani’s mother, Karishma, gave a tearful statement remembering her daughter. “Bharti is love. Pure. Always thinking about everybody — friends, parents, family, her dog Blue.”

She continued, “God gave me [her] as a blessing. But what happened now? What happened to my blessing now? I want my baby back. I won’t be able to live without her. It’s impossible. I’m empty here.”

The concert was Bharti’s first, as her mother had described her as a hard worker and selfless daughter who focused diligently on her studies. Karishma initially rejected Bharti’s request to attend the festival, but relented later on, saying that it was the “first thing” that Bharti had asked for herself.

“I don’t know what it was, but this was not a concert – because my baby did not come back,” Karishma cried.

In the meantime, Lassiter has filed a $20 million wrongful death lawsuit for the family. It names Live Nation, NRG, the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation, and Travis Scott.
