Another music awards show, another chance to make it into the history books — this is the case for BTS who have once again reached a milestone by becoming the first Asian act to be nominated in the Artist of the Year category of the American Music Awards (AMAs).

The nominees of the 48th edition of the awards show were announced on October 28. Joining BTS as a nominee to the show’s highest accolade are Ariana Grande, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, The Weeknd, and Taylor Swift, who has set a record for most Artist of the Year award with six. She most recently took home the award during last year’s ceremony.

BTS is also in the running for Favorite Pop Duo or Group and Favorite Pop Song for their chart-smashing single “Butter.”

Rodrigo, who broke into the scene with her fan-favorite debut album SOUR, also notched the most nominations this year with seven, including New Artist of the Year, Favorite Music Video,, Favorite Pop Album and Song, Favorite Female Pop Artist, and

Favorite Trending Song, a new category introduced this year.

Canadian R&B artist and consistent AMA winner The Weeknd trailed closely behind with six nominations. Meanwhile, Doja Cat, Bad Bunny, and Giveon all followed with five nominations apiece. Bad Bunny ruled the Latin categories, while Doja Cat dominated the R&B rolls. First-time nominee Giveon made an impact by earning nominations in the New Artist of the Year, Favorite R&B Album, Artist, and Song, as well as Collaboration of the Year which he shared with Justin Bieber and Daniel Caesar for “Peaches.”

Other new categories in the awards show include Favorite Latin Duo or Group, and Favorite Gospel Artist, for which Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, earned his sole nomination.

Dubbed one of the biggest music awards shows in the United States, the AMAs selects its nominees based on performances on the Billboard music charts, streaming and album sales, radio airplay, and key fan interactions on social media. Winners are then voted by fans on the AMA website or, for the first time, through TikTok. They can do so by searching “AMAs” in-app and keying in their choices. Voting ends on November 17.

The show will emanate from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 21.
