Chicosci’s Miggy Chavez On Who You Should Vote For In May

The frontman of the former nu-metal, now pop-punk band talks politics.

Last April 9, Chicosci performed at the TUMINDIG! Atin Ang Kapangyarihan concert. It took place at the Commission on Human Rights Complex and was the culminating event of DAKILA and Dokyu Power.

At one point during their set, frontman Miggy Chavez addressed the crowd. He said, “Hindi ko sasabihin sa inyo kung sino ang dapat niyong iboto. Pero sasabihin ko kung sino ang hindi niyo dapat iboto. Don’t vote for the people who will lie to you. Don’t vote for the people who will steal from you. Para sa ating lahat ‘to, guys. Lock ‘n’ load.”

(“I won’t tell you who you should vote for. But I will tell you who you shouldn’t vote for. Don’t vote for the people who will lie to you. Don’t vote for the people who will steal from you. This is for us all, guys. Lock ‘n’ load.”)

Later that night, Chavez chat down with FreebieMNL and explained why he said that.

Awareness

The Chicosci frontman admits he used to be apathetic. But when he took stock of the last six years, he realized he had to do something. That’s why he talks about social issues these days. He doesn’t want to regret not exercising his freedom of speech when bad things happen.

“You know how it is. The more you learn about what’s happening, you have to say na parang, ‘T*ngina man, I gotta do something.’ I don’t want to be the one to tell you to do this and that. I want everyone to do it the right way,” he says.

Chavez learned from his parents. They taught him that even if you think you’re insignificant, you can still do something. That’s why he’s raising his voice.

“I want to do what’s right. I want to be able to say that I helped out. Kasi tulong tulong naman tayo lahat.”

(“I want to do what’s right. I want to be able to say that I helped out. Because we’re all in this together.”)

Message to Voters

“Now is an important time in our history,” says Chavez. He says it’s great that people can spread information with the click of a button now. Unfortunately, many have abused that power.

On fake news peddlers, Chavez said, “They’re going to f*ck up your mind since that’s what they’re hired to do.”

He advises voters to get information from legitimate sources.

“You have to be smart about it. You have to know where to look, which is hindi yung mga TikTok na yan. They’re saying so much without saying nothing.”

What’s next for Chicosci?

When talk turned to his band’s future, he joked, “Tingnan natin kung anong mangyayari sa bansang ‘to.”

(“Let’s see what will happen to this country.”)
