Coldplay’s first single in over a year is out of this world — literally!
As a unique way of premiering their newest single “Higher Power,” British rock band Coldplay linked up with French ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet to play their special performance of the song inside the International Space Station, orbiting the planet at around 250 miles above Earth.
The live video of their conversation on Friday served as the Viva La Vida hit-makers’ “one-man concert” for Pesquet. “”Right now we aren’t able to play for anybody on Earth, so we thought we’d just play for you,” lead singer Chris Martin to the astronaut during their chat.
“Higher Power,” whose music video features an intergalactic performance of “alien holograms,” is reportedly the first single off Coldplay’s yet-to-be-announced ninth studio album.
It joins other popular anthems that have been played from an astronomical distance, the first-ever being “Jingle Bells,” which blared inside NASA’s Gemini VI-A spacecraft in December 1965. The rapper will.i.am’s track “Reaching for the Stars” also boasts the distinction as being the first song to premiere from Mars. Other songs that have been played outside of Earth include The Beatle’s “Across the Universe” and David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” We’re starting to sense a theme here.
