Despite a no-show, BLACKPINK bagged 4 awards at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards

SEOUL — Organized by CJ E&M, the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards ceremony, wrapped up their highly anticipated event, inviting some of the biggest K-Pop stars to their awarding ceremony. While fans from all over the world were talking about their faves outfits, wins, and performances, one group did not show up which caused quite a buzz.

BLACKPINK, arguably one of the biggest K-Pop acts of 2020, won 3 awards from MAMA including ‘Best Female Group’, ‘Best Dance Performance Female Group,’ and the ‘Worldwide Fan’s Choice Top 10’ that night. CJ E&M also recognized the group as one of 2020’s Visionaries for being the biggest girl group from South Korea this year.

However, the four-member girl group was nowhere to be seen. After the announcements that they won, there was no pre-recorded message by the BLACKPINK members, and the awards ceremony quickly cut into the next performances.

BLACKPINK however did attend the QQ Music (Tencent) “Boom Boom Awards 2020” where they received the Most Popular Overseas Group of the Year.

According to fans, a couple of year-end awards shows in South Korea are notorious for giving awards to other groups if certain groups fail to attend the awarding ceremony. It’s no surprise that BLACKPINK skipped this year’s MAMA. Also, in 2017, MAMA came under fire after netizens saw BLACKPINK’s faces blurred out during the ceremony of Best Female Group, as the group was not able to attend. Management later called it a technical error on their end.

Despite that, fans are happy and shocked that the girl group not only won once, but 4 times this year. Truly well-deserved!

Congratulations to Jisoo, Lisa, Jennie and Rose! Keep slaying!
