Taylor Swift’s 10-minute version of “All Too Well” is smashing the charts and breaking records. The newly released track dethroned Don McLean’s legendary song “American Pie” as the longest #1 hit in Billboard’s Hot 100 chart history earlier this week.
New Record Billboard’s Longest Song
“American Pie” hit the charts in 1972 and set a record for the longest song, clocking in 8 minutes and 42 seconds. It maintained its spot for almost half a century, but the historic streak has now come to an end. The extended Taylor’s Version of “All Too Well” is exactly 10 minutes and 13 seconds long, officially making it the longest #1 hit today.
McLean Congratulates Swift
McLean was courteous about the chart takeover and congratulated her on social media. “There is something to be said for a song that has staying power. ‘American Pie’ remained on top for 50 years, and now Taylor Swift has unseated such a historic piece of artistry,” he told Billboard.
“Let’s face it, nobody ever wants to lose that #1 spot, but if I had to lose it to somebody, I sure am glad it was another great singer/songwriter such as Taylor,” McLean added.
Red (Taylor’s Version) Tops Charts
Aside from taking the spot as the #1 longest song and hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, her album Red (Taylor’s Version) debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts.
After news broke about the record, Swift expressed how grateful she is to her fans for helping her accomplish such an incredible milestone. “I’m so proud of this song and the memories I have with you guys because of it. You truly chose this one and now you did THIS?! I’m floored. A ten-minute song is at the top of the Hot 100,” she tweeted.
“All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” was released on November 12 as part of Red (Taylor’s Version). It was accompanied by a short film directed by Swift, starring Dylan O’Brien and Sadie Sink.
