Dua Lipa dominates with Song of the Year in Billboard’s 2021 Hot 100 chart

Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, and Morgan Wallen also snagged top spots in Billboard’s year-ender charts.

Despite its ups and downs, 2021 was still a stellar year in music. As another year draws to a close, major music publications and streaming platforms are now listing their most-listened tracks of the past twelve months.

With news that The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” is now Billboard’s number one song of all time, the famed music magazine has now followed it up with its year-end Hot 100 list, naming Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” as 2021’s undisputed #1 hit.

The fourth single off her sophomore album Future Nostalgia, the electro-disco dance track featuring DaBaby also appeared on the 2020 year-end lists by several publications, even clinching the best song of the year by Cosmopolitan and the Herald Sun. It was also nominated for Song of the Year and Song of Summer at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, as well as Global Hit of the Year at the MTV Millennial Awards.

The interesting thing about Billboard’s year-ender song chart is that the best-placing hits bled from last year’s list. Even though Dua Lipa, The Weeknd, or Ariana Grande didn’t put out new music this year, their 2020 bangers such as “Save Your Tears” and “Blinding Lights” still got to sit on the top three spots. 24kgolden and iann dior’s “Mood” managed to clinch the fourth rank, while Olivia Rodrigo’s rowdy “Good 4 u” closed out this year’s top five tracks.

Elsewhere, Drake dominated Billboard’s Year-End Top Artists chart. He’s trailed by the up-and-coming Rodrigo in second place, while The Weeknd and Taylor Swift, who ruled the music charts once more with her Red (Taylor’s Version) re-release, placed third and fourth, respectively. Controversial country singer Morgan Wallen finished at fifth.

Coincidentally, Wallen, who got heat following a video recording him shouting a racial slur, also secured the #1 spot in Billboard’s Year-End 200 Albums for his Dangerous: The Double Album. Rodrigo appears once again as the second placer in this list for Sour, followed by Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon, Taylor Swift’s Evermore, and Drake’s Certified Lover Boy.

With her consistent chart performance, it doesn’t surprise anyone anymore that Rodrigo made it to the top of Billboard’s 2021 Top New Artist. Not only that, but the 18-year-old pop-rock princess is also the publication’s top female artist of the year.

Billboard’s year-end music recaps represent aggregated metrics for each artist, title, label, and music contributor on the weekly charts based on sales, streams, and radio plays from November 21, 2020, through November 13, 2021.
