“I won’t stop even when my hair turns grey (I’m tone-deaf) / ‘Cause they won’t stop until they cancel me,” the rapper posted on his Twitter.

In response to a social media campaign spearheaded by Generation Z TikTok users last month, rapper Eminem released a new song on Friday that addresses those who are trying to “cancel” the rapper.

In a tweet, Eminem shared the animated lyric video to the song, “Tone Deaf,” part of his latest surprise album Music to be Murdered By — Side B released in December 2020. He captions his tweet with a part of the song’s lyric that seems like a summarized response to the backlash he received: “I won’t stop even when my hair turns grey (I’m tone-deaf)/ ‘Cause they won’t stop until they cancel me.

Last month, a TikTok campaign launched by the app’s Generation Z users — people born in the late 1990s to the early 2010s — tried to “cancel” the Detroit rapper over his lyric in the hit 2010 single with Rihanna, “Love The Way You Lie,” which seemed to glorify domestic violence and abusive relationships.

The hip-hop ballad, which was nominated for five Grammy Awards including “Song of the Year” in 2011, talks about the love-hate dynamic that comes with a toxic relationship, and one couple’s refusal to depart from it despite the pain.

Meanwhile, “Tone Deaf,” part of Eminem’s latest surprise album, Music to be Murdered By — Side B, talks about Eminem’s, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, ability to withstand criticism and controversy. In the lyrics, Eminem teasingly pins the blame on his alter ego, Slim Shady, for his rebellious rhymes, and swears that he will never change his artistic choices due to public pressure.

Of course, Eminem isn’t a stranger to controversy. The rapper has had a row with celebrities like Nick Cannon and Machine Gun Kelly, has pleaded guilty to assault and possession of a concealed weapon in 2001, and has even been interrogated twice by the US President’s Secret Service over his “threatening lyrics” aimed towards George W. Bush and Donald Trump.

Given that, the odds of Eminem bowing down to the whims of Gen Z kids seems to be “slim.”
