FreebieMNL’s Picks: Our Favorite Performances at MAMA 2020

Still not over the MAMA fever!

For idols and their fans, music awards shows are the most sought-after events towards the end of the year as various awarding bodies recognize the year’s most memorable moments in music. Last Sunday’s Mnet Asian Music Awards had many fans anticipating the winners, but more than that, fans were excited for the amazing performances prepared by their faves.

With the theme ‘NEW-TOPIA’, artists created special stages that included top-class motion graphic visuals and AR, pushing the limits of live stream experiences in this pandemic era. We have to admit, the MAMA stages this year were one of the best we’ve seen in a while. (Billboard, take notes!)

We’re listing down our favorite performances from Mnet Asian Music Awards, from rookies to groups to solos:

Jessi x Hwasa

After signing with Psy’s P Nation, Jessi became one of the hottest acts this year with her title track, ‘Nunu Nana’. Hwasa on the other hand, received a lot of love for her second title track as a solo, ‘Maria’. Put these two bold, powerful artists on stage together and what do you get? A jaw-dropping performance that screams absolute girl power. Two queens together? We loved to see it.

THE BOYZ x ATEEZ x Stray Kids

Boy group on boy group on boy group? Yes, please! Three of the most powerful K-Pop boy groups from the new generation giving us back to back to back Sparta-themed performances is something we weren’t ready for. We honestly don’t know how we survived this one.

Twice

ONCE has had a very lucky year! TWICE danced to their top tracks of 2020, ‘More and More’ and ‘Can’t Stop Me’, as well as debuted a new pre-release song on the MAMA Stage, ‘Cry For Me’, which sent ONCE on an absolute frenzy on the internet. All the girls looked so good, and it was so nice seeing how much TWICE has grown as a K-Pop girl group.

TREASURE

The last time a YG Entertainment artist showed up in MAMA was 2015. Mnet and YG’s relationship has been sour for years but it seems their feud is on pause as TREASURE signals YG’s comeback to the MAMA stage. YG artists are known to have one of the best stages in MAMA history, and TREASURE did not come to play. Labeled the ‘Worldwide Monster Rookies of 2020’, the 12-member boy group put on a futuristic, high energy performance that had us thinking: are they really a 4-month rookie group?

BOA

Before there was BTS, BLACKPINK and yes, even BIGBANG, SUJU, SNSD, and 2NE1, there was BOA. Celebrating her 20 years in the music industry, no one can deny that BOA’s success as one of the early idols is an inspiration for many. In her 2020 MAMA performance, she proves she’s still got it and will always have what it takes to be a top K-Pop star. If you still don’t know who she is, Google is free.

NCT

NCT is aiming for world domination, and we won’t be surprised if they succeed. The 23-member boy group under SM Entertainment performed their latest single, ‘RESONANCE’ and it blew our minds! We thought that 23 guys on the MAMA stage would be a bit much but NCT proved us wrong, leaving us with chills down our spine as we watched them eat up the show. We don’t know what Lee Soo Man is trying to sell us but consider it sold.

BTS

Of course, this list would not complete if we didn’t include BTS in this list. Winning Worldwide Icon of the Year, BTS proved to us they deserved every bit of the award as performed the song that broke the internet, ‘Dynamite’, and ‘Life Goes On’.
